Basically, morning and evening are the best times to hunt because these are when animals are most likely to show up. That is why it has always been compared and questioned on which time is much better. Both have its advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of significant factors to consider in deciding when the perfect time is, from knowing the length of distance of the bedding area to the feeding area, determining the hunting pressure, to observing the moon phase.
Morning hunts: its advantages
This would be the time that animals are most likely to act and move to their feeding and bedding area. Since the sun is still up, it is easy for you to track down their tracks that might lead to their bedding area. If this is the case, it would be good for you as you can just hide yourself in one of the trees or in a branch that can favor your shooting or aim.
The moon phase would play a part in the animal’s movement so you have to observe it. Observe the night before the hunt. If it is really dark as in the moon would not show up, then the animals are not likely to move too much. Animals would move to feed their selves so if there isn’t much activities in the dark evening (the moon is completely out), it would be likely that their actions would be done in the morning in which it would be easy for you to have them as targets.
Morning hunts: its disadvantages
Generally, as the night evolve into morning, big game animals still tend to adapt and adjust their eyes to the rising of the sun so it is likely that their vision is still in blur. When one can’t see clearly, it is obvious that they would use and activate their other senses. In this case, most probably the animals would use their sense of hearing making their sensitivity to any motion highly active. A small clatter can drive your target away from your sight.
Another disadvantage of a morning hunt is that there could be people near you that can disrupt your hunting. There are a lot of activities going on in the day and a lot of people are more active so there is a possibility that you are not going to be the only one in the wild or in the woods. You may find some fellow hunters that may become your rivals. Rival hunters would probably try to scare your animal away while they try to get it themselves.
Evening hunts: its advantages
The last light of the day would be the time that big game animals mostly move to their feeding areas. The reason behind this is that the majority of heavy big game animals would tend to eat in a hearty manner as soon as they would notice the temperature decreasing for the night. This would also be the time that most deer would come out to go to their feeding areas.
Evening hunts: its disadvantages
There may be a possibility that there are a lot more animals are coming at this point of time but it’s not going to be an easy task. So you have already spotted a target which is great but shooting it in the dark would prove to be a problem. Even if you were able to shoot one, retrieving it in a dark night sky would be your another problem.
